Planning 101: Refillable Planners

So you’ve decided that you’re ready to take the plunge and buy your very first refillable planner. There are plenty of benefits to having a refillable planner and this option is highly customizable for the person who knows exactly what they want in a planner.

However, after a little bit of research you find that there are so many choices. What size should I choose? Which brand should I go with? Where will I get my inserts? While getting started with refillable planners is no easy feat, we are here to give you the basic knowledge to get you started.

Brands

There are quite a few brands of planners. Here are some of the most popular ones.

Filofax– This vendor offers tons of different styles, refills, and planner accessories. Filofax refers to their refillable planners as “personal organizers.” They also have notebooks, electronics accessories, folders, portfolios, pens, and pencils. Filofax offers new designs and colors and retires old styles once in awhile but for the most part their planners are consistent. It’s relatively easy to find these planners from Amazon and other resellers, and there are even options to buy these used at a discounted price point. Prices for new planners range from $58 and up.

kikki.K– kikki.K is a one stop shop for all your stationery needs. They call their refillable planners “time planners” and they sell new designs each year. This means if you see a planner you like, do not hesitate to get it because once it’s gone you won’t see it on their site again. kikki.K offers nylon and leather planners. Prices for these planners range from $39.95-$79.95.

Franklin Covey– Franklin Covey also offers many designs of planners. On their website they refer to their planners as “binders.” Some designs are available for purchase longer than others and they come in nylon, leather and simulated leather. These planners start at $39.95.

Kate Spade– Kate Spade offers their refillable planners yearly around October. We are unsure of whether or not Kate Spade will be offering refillable planners again this year, but keep checking back to their site. Prices are $60 or more depending on the sales.

Louis Vuitton– Before you cringe at the LV price tag, remember: you get what you pay for. Louis Vuitton planners tend to be of higher quality, like many of their leather goods. On their website they refer to their planners as “ring agenda covers.” Prices for their planners start at $365.

Sizes available

Each brand refers to the sizes of their planners a little differently however most people will refer to Filofax sizes when speaking generally.

Filofax- mini, pocket, compact, personal, A5, and A4

kikki.K- small, medium, large and the brand-specific “Personal Time Planner.”

Franklin Covey- pocket, compact, classic, and monarch

Each of the companies mentioned above provide inserts for the planners they make and sell. If the inserts that are included with the planner you purchase do not work for you, there are many other options you can choose from. Philofaxy.com offers many different printable inserts for free. Etsy also has a variety of sellers who make printable and printed inserts. In order to find inserts on Etsy try searching “(size) inserts” or “(size) planner refills.”

If you are still unsure as to what size planner you would like to get, try cutting or folding some paper and carry it around with you for a week or two. If you find that the pages are too small or too big try the next size until you find something that will work for your needs.
